Tax returns

Books works out your tax return from the books, box by box: the BAS in Australia, the VAT return in the UK, P.P.30 and P.P.36 in Thailand, and sales tax by jurisdiction in the US. You file it with the tax office as you do now, then mark it filed here.

  1. Open Books, then Tax

On a computer, choose Books in the sidebar. On a phone, tap More, then Books. Tap Tax. Each return is listed by period, newest first, with its status, when it's due and what it comes to.

  2. Open a return

Tap one to see its boxes. Tap a box to see the lines and journals behind it. Documents lists the sales and purchases it covers.

  3. Close it once the period ends

Tap Close the return, then Close it. Its figures are frozen, and the tax moves to what you owe or are owed.

  4. Download it

Spreadsheet (CSV) and PDF give you the figures to enter on the tax office's site, or to hand to your accountant.

  5. Mark it filed

Once it's lodged, tap Mark filed and add the day it was Filed on and the Reference the tax office gave you.

  6. Record the payment

Tap Record the payment, or Record the refund, then pick Paid from, the day and the amount. The return shows Paid once it's settled.

Good to know

  • Cash or accrual, on Books settings, decides when a sale counts: when it's paid, or when it's invoiced.
  • Anything dated in a period whose return is already closed goes into the next open return, marked Late.
  • How often you do returns, and Simpler BAS or Full reporting in Australia, are on Books settings.
  • Not registered? Tax says so, and an Owner can switch registration on in Books settings.
  • Books doesn't file the return for you.
