Merge contacts

When the same person turns up twice, merge them into one contact. Everything from both comes together: what they've sent, their orders and your notes.

  1. Open Contacts

On a computer, choose Contacts in the sidebar. On a phone, tap More, then Contacts.

  2. Look for possible duplicates

If two contacts share a phone number or the same full name, a note at the top says how many possible duplicates there are. Tap it.

  3. Or start from one person

Open their page and tap Merge with someone else. Search for the other contact and tap them.

  4. Pick what to keep

You see Contact one and Contact two side by side. Under Where they differ, choose the name, email or phone to keep.

  5. Merge them

Tap Merge these two, check the summary, then tap Merge them.

Good to know

  • A merge can't be undone.
  • An old link to the merged-away contact takes you to the one that stayed.
  • If they really are two people, tap They are different people. That pair isn't suggested again.
  • Signing in stays with the email it was given to.
